14 October 2009 is an important milestone for TYPO Magazine. Not only we published the 37th issue of the magazine, but we also launched a brand new website with many great fetaures. Don’t forget to follow TYPO Twitter channel typo_en.

The “Mexican” Issue of TYPO features an overview of trends in contemporary Mexican type design and examples of the most important custom-made newspaper and magazine fonts made in the past fifteen years by Oscar Yáñez, a Typo Essay by Alejandro Cabrera Ávila or or an article How print arrived to the New World by Cristóbal Henestrosa. Rubén Gallo wrote an essay on the Stridentism avant-garde movement based on the analysis of a yet-unknown calligram from 1923, designed by one of the most well-known activists of Stridentism Manuel Maples Arce.

Typo.Project section features an article The rediscovery of Boudewijn Ietswaart by Feike de Jong about the work of half-forgotten Dutch designer whose types made in the Mexico City in early 1960s were digitalised nearly 40 years later by the members of the Círculo de Tipógrafos group.

Filip Blažek wrote a short overview of the life and work of Czech graphic designer, typographer, lecturer and writer Bohuslav Blažej, who due to unfortunate historic circumstances did not become a European design star. Regular section Typo.Font offers a review of Tabac, a new type family designed for magazine and newspaper setting from the hand of Czech typographer Tomáš Brousil.

From now on, you can subscribe to TYPO on-line, you can also buy single issues. Stay tuned, our website will soon offer you many new features!

It is our pleasure to announce that we have finally launched the new website! A project long in the works, we have merged the typography portal Typo.cz and the TYPO magazine website.

The website is now built on the WordPress publishing system. This system allows the editors to publish articles and news quickly and easily, and offers space for reader discussions. As a result, Typo.cz has become a full-fledged blog that will be updated regularly.

Innovations on Typo.cz

Following a lengthy debate, we decided to provide the most space on the homepage to the blog, which will be focused on news and commentary on graphic design and typography. What’s new, brief news from the sector that readers can submit by using a simple form, and a calendar, which functions on the same principle, have been added to the right column. Another new feature is a convenient form for readers to submit their tips for website of the week, font of the week and photographs for the photo of the week section.

All new articles, news and entries in the calendar are automatically sent to Twitter – tune us in at typo_en. And it would be unimaginable for the site to be without RSS feeds and search tools.

An online order form for subscriptions to TYPO magazine has also been set up, making it possible for you to pay for subscriptions by credit/debit card or bank transfer. Individual back issued can also be ordered. The contents of all the issues published so far, a list of contributors and additional information about the magazine are also featured on the site.

Up next…

Right now we are working on being able to sell individual issues in PDF format. After that, we will create files so you can browse the website on your iPhone or other cell phone, and work on other new features.

We are also working on completing the resources related to Central European typography. The Database section will feature links to design studios, typographers, schools, magazines, type foundries, institutions etc. This should be ready by the end of 2009.

Thank you for your patience and we apologise in advance for any snags in the system that you may encounter – they will be removed quickly. And we look forward to receiving your comments and opinions!
